Training in Drug Discovery and Related Sciences

The Foundation offers a range of training opportunities in drug discovery and related sciences that can be facilitated using simulation software.
Topics include but are not limited to, the full drug discovery value chain from target identification through to the clinic, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning applied to drug discovery and regulatory sciences. We work with various industry partners to develop and deliver training sessions to focused groups of researchers from African research institutions.

Coursera MOOC: Introduction to Small Molecule Drug Discovery & Development

This four-week course takes a high-level tour of what it takes to research and develop a new drug from laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside.

It is relevant for scientists who are new to drug discovery research or already have some experience, health professionals, or anyone who is interested in knowing what had to happen to ensure that their medicine is effective and safe.

In partnership with Ersilia, we presented a fully sponsored workshop on implementing AI/ML tools in drug discovery. The workshop was hosted in Accra, Ghana and targeted early career scientists based in East Africa.

Comprehensive Workshop on Preclinical Drug Discovery (CDD) (April 2024)

In partnership with Fraunhofer-ITMP and EU OPENSCREEN, with funding from VolkswagenStiftung, the H3D Foundation hosted A Comprehensive Workshop on Preclinical Drug Discovery (CDD). A total of 42 participants from 20 different African institutions across 10 countries attended the four-day workshop. The participants received full financial support to join in person.

Bringing data science and AI/ML tools to infectious disease research (Sept 2022)

In Sept 2022, the H3D Foundation and Ersilia Open Source Initiative co-hosted a 4-day in-person workshop in Cape Town. The aim was to offer young scientists hands-on training on the use of novel artificial intelligence tools for anti-infectives drug discovery.

Introduction to Drug Discovery (October 2021)

In October 2021, the H3D Foundation sponsored an in-person 2-day “Introduction to Drug Discovery” Workshop in Cape Town, hosting 23 participants from across South Africa. The course was targeted at individuals who wished to gain an understanding of drug discovery and development, and exposure to the scientific strategies and decision-making a pharmaceutical company’s research organisation may employ to develop safe, effective, and innovative medicines.
